WhatsApp has released a new feature
It is designed to make it more secure. On October 14, the messaging app introduced end-to-end encrypted backups in chats. WhatsApp already features end-to-end encryption by default, which protects messages between its two billion-plus users.
Users of WhatsApp have received a new security update. WhatsApp’s privacy policy focuses on providing end-to-end encryption for users’ chats as well as options to conceal status, profile pictures, and other information. The meta-owned instant messaging service has now provided a new privacy function for its users in one such privacy-driven improvement. The new feature will prevent an unknown WhatsApp contact from seeing your last seen and online status if you have never communicated with them.
The Internet is especially important for users on social networking sites. With that in mind, WhatsApp is rethinking its privacy policy to better protect users’ privacy. And our WhatsApp tracker has all the details for you to keep you updated regarding the developments.
The news broke when a user on Twitter questioned WhatsApp whether anyone was having trouble checking the last seen of their friends. Another user responded by sharing a screenshot of the WhatsApp Support page for the same issue, which cites the new security feature. “To improve our users’ privacy and security, we’re making it more difficult for individuals you don’t know and haven’t interacted with to view your last seen and online presence on WhatsApp,” states the screenshot information captioned with WhatsApp Support. It goes on to say that the new privacy function will have no effect on users’ relationships with friends, family, and companies with whom they have previously communicated.
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp customer support explained that the company has implemented “a measure to improve privacy and security on the platform that will make it harder for people that users haven’t chatted with and don’t know to see their last seen and online presence.”
It should be noted that several apps on the Google Play Store are able to log the last seen and monitor your online activities. People use these apps to stalk other WhatsApp users, so they know when other people were online.
“Thanks to the latest improvements to protect users, WhatsApp doesn’t show up the last seen and the online status if you have never chatted with another WhatsApp account. Since those third-party apps don’t have an active chat with you, they cannot see when you are online,” a report by WABeta Info read.
For all new chats, WhatsApp users will now have the option to switch on vanishing messages by default. When enabled, any new one-on-one chats you or another person start will be set to disappear after the length you specify, and we’ve introduced a new option when launching a group chat to enable it for groups you create. This new feature is optional, and it will not affect or destroy any current chats.
In addition to the current choice of 7 days, the social media app has added two more lengths for disappearing messages: 24 hours and 90 days.
WhatsApp will display a notice in conversations telling people this is the default you’ve chosen for users who opt to turn on default vanishing messages. This makes it obvious that it’s not about you; it’s about how you want to connect with everyone on WhatsApp in the future. Of course, if you require a certain dialogue to be permanent, you can easily flip it back.
There is a significant reason for WhatsApp’s new privacy feature, and it has to do with unknown third-party apps. Yes! Few people are aware that a few third-party applications can even log in to the last seen and online status of specified contacts. To safeguard its users, WhatsApp introduced a privacy feature that prevents third-party applications from tracking when other people are online.
As previously stated, it will have no effect on the chatting experience you have with your friends, family, or coworkers. However, to determine your active status on WhatsApp, it filters out third-party apps as well as new persons with whom you’ve never communicated before. However, if you can’t view the active status of your saved contacts, it’s not because of this feature; instead, they’ve enabled a privacy option that hides their last seen, and no one, including WhatsApp, can do anything about it.
